The Manteca Police Department Bomb Squad was formed in 1990 and is comprised of two highly trained Police Officers. They serve the City of Manteca as well as assisting other agencies in San Joaquin County. Together with the Lodi Police Department, Stockton Police Department, and the San Joaquin County Sheriffs Office they form the San Joaquin County Metropolitan Bomb Squad. There are twelve certified bomb technicians that serve on the Metropolitan Team.
Bomb Squad members are graduates of the 5-week, Hazardous Device School at Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, Alabama. Every three years they go back to Redstone Arsenal for re-certification. In addition, they train 16 hours every month to keep their skills sharp.
The Bomb Squad is trained to recognize and handle improvised explosives, commercial explosives, unstable chemicals, and military ordinances. As one of the most utilized units in the Department, they respond to all suspicious packages that may or may not contain explosives. Training for weapons of mass destruction is included in the curriculum.
The Bomb Squad also assists in post-blast crime scene investigations, and educating the public about bomb threats, suspicious packages, and the dangers of illegal fireworks.
The Bomb Squad uses the latest technology to render improvised explosives safe. This technology includes X-rays, bomb suits, disrupters, tools, bomb resistant carrying cases, and a variety of other specialized equipment.
